Ocean Waste Plasket baskets
Hand woven “plasket” baskets using rope salvaged from the coastline, seabed and drifting in the seas of Pembrokeshire and named after a few of the small islands surrounding our county.
The salvaged rope used is durable, long lasting and perfect for indoor or outdoor use. Mixed in with a rope found in local skips destined for landfill, handles made from plastic commercial trawler net floats or using the original spliced mooring eye, these baskets are completely repurposed and fantastic for laundry, logs, wetsuits or used as a planter.
The Islands here in Pembrokeshire are predominately nature reserves, Owned and managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and the National park, the islands have spectacular bird cliffs, coastal scenery and heathland. It is one of the best sites in Wales to see choughs, which are attracted by an ample supply of dung beetles.
Other breeding species include ravens, common buzzards, peregrines, northern wheatears, gulls, auks, Manx shearwaters, razorbills and guillemots.
Pembrokeshire has the most important grey seal breeding colony in southern Britain, with over 400 seal pups born each autumn. Removing deep ocean waste, mainly from the commercial fishing industry, helps to protect the survival of the colonies on the islands by removing hazards such as ghost line.
