Flat Turks Head Knot Rope Wreath

Updated: Dec 12, 2023

Using 35ft of 12mm jute rope to create a four pass, seven bight wreath.

Terminology

Bight - A bight of a rope is a simple bend of rope in which the rope does not cross over itself

Pass - How many times the whole rope revolves around the entire project.

Standing end - Stationary end of the rope

Working rope - the rope end being used

Method

Step one :

Tape ends of the rope different colours ( l have used one brown and one white for these photos). Find the middle of the rope and create a small mountain shaped “bight” on the table. Place the white-tipped pile to your right and the brown-tipped pile to your left.

Step 2 :

Twist the top of your rope to the left to create a loop.

Step 3:

Take the right hand side of your rope (white tip) and create another loop ontop to form a “Pretzel” shape.

Step 4 :

Pass the rope with the white tip underneath the standing end

Step 5:

Weave the white tip through the “pretzel” going from right to left as follows - over, under, over and under creating the letter “A” in the center.

Step 6:

Pull the white tip rope all the way through forming a 3 bight Celtic Josephine knot with a diamond shape in the centre.

Step 7 :

Your “white tip” pile of rope should be to your left and “brown tip” pile to the right and you should be stood in between each pile of rope.

Step 8 :

Make the diamond shape in the centre of your knot bigger by feeding a bit of the rope backwards.

Step 9:

Place both hands in the middle of the diamond and push outwards to create a circle as below

Step 10 :

Note where the rope crosses on the bottom of the circle as pointed out below...

Move this cross point further to the right to meet the base of the “brown tipped” rope. This will create a mouth shape in the rope at the bottom of your circle....

Step 11 :

Refering to the upper and lower part of the rope “mouth” as lips, feed the brown tipped rope under the bottom “lip” and pull through all the way to the top left of your circle as below...

Step 12 :

Pull the “top lip” over the “bottom lip” as below...

Now the “bottom lip” has become the “top lip” or “top bottom lip” 🙃

Next feed the brown tipped rope under the “top bottom lip” as below...

Step 13 :

Using your Brown tipped rope as your working rope, follow your standing line on the left by placing the working rope on the inside of the standing line...

Follow until you reach the end of your working rope..

.

Step 14

Take the white tip of the standing end and follow the outside of the wreath until your rope finishes, then tighten to create equal amounts of rope on each bight.

This finished wreath has 7 bights and 3 full passes as it was slightly shorter than 35ft. If you have used 35ft you should get a 4 pass version as you made in class.

To finish neatly side splice the ends as shown in class.

Happy Weaving 🎄🥰❤️♻️
